Carmel valley ranch is an amazing resort- not on the water but totally worth the $$. The oceana hotel in half moon bay is closer to sf but on the water and I think a good deal.

We enjoyed a large room/suit at the Carmel Fireplace Inn and Carmel Country Lodge.

Although The Carmel FIreplace Inn isn't very highly rated on Tripadvisor , we enjoyed our stay but it was about 10 years ago.

We had a nice stay at this place in Carmel. Funny story - all the trip advisor reviews talked about how they had torches available for walking into town. I was envisioning all these in guests carrying torches all over town... Then realized it was Brits talking about flashlights...

Don't know the price but we were engaged at the Martine Inn in Pacific Grove. Right on the bay.

Celebrating birthday in central CA -- going away without kids. Would live a nice ocean-viewing room for around 200-300/night in Carmel, Monterrey, Capitola or Big Sur. Any recommendations? Bonus points if they are cozy and have nice extras like wine and cheese in the evening and nice breakfasts in the am.

Thank you!
