That's interesting -- have never heard of this before!

If the keys were gone, change the locks.
If, as in your case, the keys were still there, don't change the locks and don't over-stress yourself over it.

If they were there in the AM, you're probably fine. I'd be more concerned if they were missing in the morning.

What kind of neighborhood has occasional break in? I hope you have an alarm.

LOL...for real

OP you are fine. No thief is going to take them, make copes and then return them.

I just...didn't even know what to say to this post until all the PP's said it for me.

What thief takes keys and then returns them after going to the 24/7 locksmith?

Have done this a few times too. Don't stress out.

I think they would grab the keys and not return them. It would make no sense for them to return them - just another chance for them to get caught.

If it was an impulsive drug addict type, they would have come on in immediately. If it was a profesional thief, they would take the keys and come back later.

If you are going to lose sleep over it, just change the lock - but think it is totally unnecessary!

I have done this a few times and it never occurred to me to change the locks! I don't think someone is likely to take your keys out of the door, get a copy made, then bring them back before you get up in the morning. would there even be a place open in the middle of the night to have a key made? That said, we also have a dog who would go ballistic if someone was at the front door.

Umm, yes, that would be an overreaction.

Realized this morning that my keys were in the outside lock on my front door all night. Detached house in a neighborhood with occasional break-ins. We do have a screen door that partially obscured the keys, but if someone was looking closely from the sidewalk they would have seen them. I'm worried about the off chance that someone noticed, grabbed the keys, made a copy, and returned them. Overreacting to change the locks?
