Go to Yechon in Annandale, go at off times, the place gets packed but it is a great scene and good food.

I haven't been, but read good things about Uncle Liu's Hot Pot in Merrifield. You may also wish to take them to Eden Center where IMO the food is more authentic than Present or 4 Sisters (both of which I love dearly).

For Japanese, Tachibana and Sushi Yoshi are the gold standards in NoVA. Really no need to drive into town for Japanese. Other cuisines may be a different story. And, of course, you MUST go to Rasika for Indian.

For Japanese Sushi Taro is best for sushi, no comparison. Izakaya Seki is best for traditional Japanese food but no sushi. Makoto used to be my fav but I have not been there since the original owner/chef passed away. If you need child friendly, Seki is probably the best choice. There's a new place, Crane and Turtle, in Petworth that is fusion Japanese-French led by the former sous chef from CityZen who is Japanese. Haven't tried that yet either but heard good things.

Highly recommend present or four sisters in merrifield. Four sisters does a "five courses of beef" menu which is amazing and they teach you how to eat it. Elephant jumps is also one of the best Thai places in the area right now. Ask the owner and he will help you order what is good and authentic

For authentic Vietnamese food in a nice atmosphere of recommend Present in Falls Church (rt 50 & Annandale rd). A colleague who is from Vietnam took me and ordered for the table and it was amazing.
