Actually Avon does. Susan G. Komen I avoid but I actively participate in the Avon walk. They also provide free mammograms to women who can't afford them.

Doesnt Obama care cover mamograms?

Now, that Obama Care exists, yes it does. Before Obama Care existed it didn't. What's your point. Should Avon no longer try and give screenings and care to those who need it. They also do way more than what was listed in the previous post.

If you donate make sure to specify that is it for research otherwise your donation could be used for anything: travel, bonuses, equipment etc...

Signed,

Waste of time. Donate directly to breast cancer hospitals.

I never donate to the walks though as they are only making corporate sponsors rich.

They aren't making the corporate sponsors rich; they are making the fundraising consultants rich.

Still, don't donate to events. Giving directly to the charity will help your money go to programs & research rather than t-shirts, park permits, and software that powers the "peer-to-peer" fundraising.

The Red Devils is a cancer charity which uses money raised to pay for transportation to and from chemo, groceries, house-cleaning, etc. for cancer patients. It was started in 2002 by two young women with breast cancer who saw a lot of fellow patients who were without family or resources to help them fight the disease. Thus, money goes not to research, but to providing these services. The charity took its name from a popular chemo drug and from a terrific memoir by the late Katherine Russell Rich, called "The Red Devil: To Hell With Cancer... And Back."

The website is the-red-devils.org

So far this year alone they have helped 494 patients and spent $136,000.

Very gratifying to be part of this plus very fun, often family-friendly, fund-raising events.

Use CharityNavigator and if it's Komen, read more about them to be sure you want to support them.

This.

Sorry for the loss. I never donate to the walks though as they are only making corporate sponsors rich. If you really feel called to do something look for a local charity that directly impacts lives and has low admin and overhead costs.

Thanks to all for the sentiments & advice. We will look into something smaller & local.

+1. Good.

FYI there are lots of local "zumba-thons" this time of year that support breast cancer. I'm not a fan of pinkwashing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Susan_G._Komen_for_the_Cure#Pinkwashing_in_cause_marketing) and would rather donate to individuals and smaller charities, but you guys can make your own decision.

My husband lost his mom to breast cancer a few months ago & would like to participate in a fundraising walk / run in DC this fall and include our kids too. Does anyone know of upcoming ones or where / how I begin a search other than just googling breast cancer walks DC?
