But you do tip wait staff at a restaurant, and maybe leave a tip at a hotel for the cleaning crew. I don't see it as that different.

I used to have one person who cleaned my house by herself and not part of a business. In that case, since she was "self-employed", I didn't tip. If I break it down, she was making about $25/hr. But the people I have now are part of a company, and they are probably getting paid minimum wage, so I do tip a little.

I am the PP you responded to and, yes, I tip generously when it comes to servers because that is part of their expected compensation. I don't tip because someone may or may not be making minimum wage. Based on that criteria there would be a lot of people I would need to tip including most cashiers, the people at fast food restaurants, etc.

Like others have said, tipping here is out of control and people almost look for an excuse to tip. It makes no sense but if people want to do it all power to them.

No. I contracted for an agreed upon price, and I pay that.

a server at a resaurant makes 2.01 an hour a clenaing lady makes much more.

tipping is out of cotrol when a cashier expects a tip to rign you up, TIP is to insure prompt service, if you are doing somethign that you can't provide prompt service you shoudl not expect a tip.

Christmas only. The price of one week's cleaning ($95) split between two people.

No, I just give an extra cleaning's fee at Christmas.

That tip is like the price of some cleaning people's total earning.

But it's just once a year.

At Christmas I usually pay them double for a cleaning as a "tip."

I pay $100 for their service and tip them $20 each time they come. At Xmas time, I give a better tip. I figure, just like people who take care of my kids, these people are in the inner zone of my house -- I want to keep them HAPPY. Their loyalty, honesty and happiness matter to me since they are doing jobs I don't want to do and they are in my private space.

Sorry, it's a family business so we get 1 or 2 of the family each month. It's $20 for one person or $15 each for 2. But we give about close to $300 in tips throughout the year.

I do. 3 people - I give $10, not each, total. But it used to be 2 people. They decided to add a 3rd. It was $5/each. Now they can figure out how to split it.

I really wish tipping would just stop. I get the Christmas tipping, but the rest of the year is confusing.

For people that use a cleaning service, do you tip the cleaning crew each and every time? I thought you were supposed to but my husband says you only need to tip around Christmas time. I have bi-weekly service and 2-3 ladies come to clean the house.
