I have a fifth grader. I haven't heard anything about quiet time at our school. That seems ridiculous. If they don't have their act together enough to teach something, then just send the kids out for an extra recess. My kid's school has added a weekly "guidance" class to fill the extra time. WTF? My kid complains bitterly about how stupid it is. I'd love a STEM class.

Our school doesn't do this either (I also have a 5th grader). Sounds like it's teacher/principal specific? I also love the changes Garza has put into effect. Finally, someone is acting on years and years of discussion that never goes anywhere. She seems to be a real leader.

Different grade, but I'm also hearing about more reading time, and most homework has already been finished at school. A lot of group work to research things online during several days, when the teacher is at her computer. No need to go back to the old days of straight lectures, but a teacher should spend some time teaching. "Flipped classroom" and project based learning" person on dcum, I'm starting to understand what you've been talking about all this time!

Your principal came up with this schedule. I think things are a little wacky this year and hopefully the principals will be sharing what worked and what didn't (and sharing how they worked out their schedules with the other principals) so that next year more schools will adopt the best schedules.

I'm glad yours doesn't have this. Maybe this problem resides with the principal and not Garza.

I asked my fifth grader in FCPS and he said they do not have quiet time or study hall.

Why?? All of a sudden my DD has quiet time (what is this, day care?) and study hall built into her daily schedule. This has never happened before. Is this how FCPS gave the teachers planning time when they took away Mondays? Where is the teaching? They've added more "instructional time" but so far it looks like there is less instruction in the daily schedule than ever, including the fake starting time that ends ten minutes but adds no teaching. I'm so disgusted by the changes that have happened since Garza took over.
