100% agree. But, making up names is weird. Typically, we fabricate to hide something or deceive someone. It's ok for her to not share names with him, but to make them up? Hmmmm.... Did OP say context of how the names even came up?

I didn't tell my DH the names of past relationships out of respect for him--he didn't want to know, and I also didn't think it was necessary to tell him (these were all people he's never met and never will meet, and we will never live in the same cities as them). Though I also am not friends with any of them out of respect for him and for our marriage.

Unless an ex was abusive and horrible. many women would like to continue with a friendship, because they might like the guy as a friend and also like aspects of their personality, but did not share a romantic spark.
It is difficult to explain such relationships to your SO, because they are never comfortable with the "non-sexual" friendships.

My GF just admitted that when she told me about past lovers, she would substitute fake names for her ex lovers' real name.
For example, if the guy's name was really "David", she would tell me about the guy and their relationship, but tell me his name was "Paul" instead of "David".
What is the purpose of this? Was she still seeing these people and did not want me to get suspicious if we bumped into them while out, or if their names popped up on caller ID?
