I tell my MIL I love her and then she responds, "I love you too honey." Life is good.

I have a MIL who always says "I love you" whenever we say goodbye. I feel that awkward moment like when you are dating someone and you don't want to say it back. Ironically I probably do love her in some ways, but...

I don't know. What to do?

Oh good grief, so much of the Dcum population needs to grow up. It seems like mil's are damned if they do and damned if they don't. She loves you. How fricken awful is that...I am glad I have daughters.

+1

Amazing the things that bother people. So many ways to deal with it without causing offense.

OP, hard as it may be to believe it does not mean that she really, really loves you. She probably likes you otherwise she would not say it and she likely does not say it to every woman but you happened to be married to her son.

Not unlike when you meet someone and say "nice to meet you".

Learn to be gracious.

And the Grinch had a heart that was two sizes too small.

"You too. See you soon!" We are adults. Not awkwardness needed even if you're uncomfortable with something. It's ok to not want to say something. It's not okay to act like a buffoon because someone else makes a nice, well intentioned gesture.

You have a mil who loves you. That's a good thing. Try to be kind to her and love her back.

1. Get over yourself. This woman raised the man you chose to spend the rest of your life with.

2. Smile

3. Say, "Love you too Maisy."

4. Continue to get over yourself.

Just say "thank you"!

Sometimes I say "you too" and most of the time I just let it go unanswered. My family doesn't do this, so it's weird to me. Luckily, most of our phone conversations are now FaceTime with my kid and husband involved so I just let them respond.

Mine does, too, but usually it's in the presence of DH or DD. I tend to reply "We love you, too!".

My FIL says this to me too and it makes me uncomfortable even though he is genuine and sweet. I just am not that opening about saying I love you. My MIL would never say it to me.

My husband told my MIL to stop because it made me uncomfortable. It does. She didn't.
