Random Harvest in Old Town Alexandria seems to specialize in smaller furniture (which makes sense, considering the neighborhood).

Bombay Company (the storefront) has gone out of business, but they have an on line store that sells petite-sized furniture.

Bassett Furniture has a line of semi-custom couches that you can order in various scales to fit your space. Cost was about comparable with other mid-range furniture stores we looked at.

+2!!! They sell exactly what you are looking for, and quality is awesome. We've been really happy with our purchases for our townhouse.

Ballard Designs used to sell an "apartment" furniture line.

We had the same issue with our living room. We found one that was proportional at Mastercraft but I don't think they're in business any more. Someone told me that Crate and Barrel can do shorter sofas custom, but that you won't see any of them out on the floor or on the web site. If you like any of theirs it's worth asking. I think that Rowe also does custom shorter sofas. We actually found some decent ones at Laz-y-boy if you can get past the stereotype. They were very attractive and not like ugly recliners at all. Good luck!

consider a loveseat instead of a sofa.

Also check out room and board and west elm

agree to look for "apartment sofa" and read apartment therapy

We ordered a custom sofa from Urban Retreat in Reston to get the size we liked. It was a good price and decent quality but not heirloom. They have examples from the different manufacturers but you pick what you want from a design book and they special order it.

I hear you, OP. We have a 50s style house and it may not be as small but definitely most furniture is sized for McMansions.

I'd search Apartment Therapy:

Sheffield furniture is nice but pricey.

There's a consignment furniture store in Bethesda right on Wisconsin. Sorry I can't remember the name.

We love our small 1920s house, and want the furniture to be in keeping with the room proportions. While I was fine with buying a period-looking dining set and other wood furniture on Craigslist, I do want a new leather sofa/armchairs. But all the pieces in major furniture stores are sized for the average mansion, not for a small Victorian home.

Where would you buy a petite couch or armchair?

Thank you!
