Where is your sofa too mushy? This happened to one of mine after several years and I placed a thin sheet of plywood under the seat cushions and it made a huge difference. You can also insert a thin layer of firm foam padding inside the seat cushions to extend the life of the sofa.

Just reupholstered my 15 year old one. It wasn't cheap, but a new one of same quality would have been twice as much, and it's still in my home not a landfill.

I also have a sofa bed. It's 9 years old and looks like hell, but it is still comfy enough for tv and the occasional nap. I'm not sure anyone wants to actually sleep in it.

I have a 10 year old american leather pull-out couch that we purchased for around $5k. It is used daily for hours every day. The bed has been slept in for probably a year total, counting all the weird times when we have moved into the living room for a while. I may start using an egg crate on the bed soon, but the couch part is in absolute perfect condition.

We have lived in our house for 15 years and just bought our 3rd set of couches. So they last about 5 years but I stretch it to 7 years. 
The ones in the basement that we rarely used are 15 years old... They need to be replaced but only teenage boys see them so I lack motivation to replace them.
I have always been told to spend money on the room you spend the most time so they don't wear out as fast and buy cheap ones for the rooms that don't get used as often.
Please shoot me if I have the same couch in my family room for 20 years.

I have a $5k couch. It needs to be recovered after ten years some of which involved two toddlers and a dog.

It depends on the quality of the couch. I had two couch and we had it when we are married. It is not expensive as others but I love the quality of it. It lasted for 7 years now but we are thinking to buy new one on December because we are planning to renovate our living room.

My parents have a couch set currently in the grandchildrens playroom and jumped on a lot that is almost 30 years old and still in amazing condition. No sagging or squishy cushions. Amazing quality.
Our crate and barrel slip cover couch is 7 years old and probably only has about another 3-4 years.

I have heavily used sofas that are 10 years old. Look and feel practically new. One is leather one is fabric. About 2800 for 1 and 300 for the other when new. When I am ready to "replace" they will be recovered, not replaced. The frames are solid.

I typically get about 10 years out of my couches, but we're a family of 2 (1 adult, 1 kid) and we're pretty easy on our couches. We typically spend about $1,000.

Subject: How Often Do You Replace Couches?
We have a small house with one major sitting area. Between my family of five, my couches are sat on daily for many hours. The sofas were not particularly expensive to begin with and now after five years are way too mushy. Is this normal for relatively cheap couches? My parents have the same leather couches for 20 years, but their kids are grown and they were expensive to begin with (and are leather). Anyone else struggling with this?
