The best meal DW and I ever had was at Gerard's in Lahaina. Many years ago, but current yelp reviews suggest it's still outstanding.

The dawn ride down Haleakala is totally worth it. Sip hot chocolate and watch a beautiful sunrise, then it's 38 miles downhill from the mountaintop to the beach, and you only pedal twice. Halfway down you stop for a pancake breakfast. Hard to beat.

+2 for Leilani's. We went 15 years ago, so don't know if it is the same--you looked thru a cookbook and told them basically what you wanted--no regular menu! Also we did the bike ride with a small family run company and loved it--went to the winery after for picnic lunch. web address for them is : http://www.mauibike.com/ avoid the sunrise tour as half the time you are above the clouds anyway.

Loved Lahaina--bought our one and only true piece of art there--more art galleries per capita than anywhere else in the US.

Biking down did not look at all appealing. Also, apparently you can't even start at the top any more.

+1 to all of this. Also, eat awesome fish tacos and drink foofie drinks at Leilani's (on the path in Kanaapali) at sunset. Dreamy. I love Maui beyond description.

You don't say which side of the island you're staying on, but if you're on the Kaanapali side, don't miss breakfast and/or lunch at Leoda's. Also, dinner at Lahaina Grill, while not cheap, is always outstanding. Aloha!

Things we liked included Atlantis Submarine and Hike Maui. There's a sushi place in Kapalua near the Ritz that is supposed to be wonderful - we had kids with us so we didn't go. Go to Paia and walk around, make a reservation for Mama's Fish House before you go.

That's what I was going to write! The Revealed series tells you how to get to cool places, like waterfalls & public beaches that require 4X4.
Snorkel at Ahihi Bay, visit Big & maybe Little Makena Beach (little M. is clothing optional)
Stella Blue's for breakfast
Io Valley cool garden & rock formations

I have only been to Maui once - 12 years ago - but did the dawn bike ride down from Haleakula (not sure if that name is right) and loved it. I can't remember what else we did aside from Hana. I want to say that we did a day cruise to another island, but we visited Kauai and Oahu on that trip as well, so am a bit foggy on the details of where we left from for the day cruise.

My husband and I are going to Maui next week. We are moderately adventurous, want to relax and have a good time. We have been a couple of times and are thinking of going up to the crater, we have never been, and are skipping Hana.

So, what are your best tips for fun, food, things we need to see or do?
