PP here - I realize I said we planted in the fall in my first post, but now that I remember the sale I remember it was summer. I think we bought in July and planted in August.

Thanks for the info. Do you remember what each tree cost?


I can't remember for sure, I believe they were around $150, but we bought them when they had their 30% off sale (in July). Not the best time to plant trees, but we watered them well and they have been thriving.

I don't know how old they were but if you get a tree of that size, it will likely flower. Also look into rebates from your county. We got a $50 rebate per tree.

Most nurseries can tell you how old they are. For example, tell the plantsman: "I want a three to four year old rebud, what do you have?" many mail-order houses list the age of theur saplings in their hardcover/online catalog

It depends. The older the tree the more expensive.

Trees you buy at a nursery will be at least two years old. Younger than that and they are sold as whips or saplings. Trees you buy online are likely to be younger, not older, than nursery trees because they have to ship better and smaller is easier. Go to a good nursery (I love Behnkes around here) and take a look. Or just call them!

I'd like get an eastern redbud flame for my yard. I've read that they do not flower until 4-6 years old. How old is a tree typically if I purchase from a nursery? Can I purchase an older tree online? I know I don't want a tree that is too mature, but I'm wondering if I can get a 3 year old tree rather than a 1 year old tree.
