Maybe among his group of friends but not overall.

Minecraft is huge. Microsoft just bought it for $2.5 billion. It's just as popular as high schools and colleges as in elementary schools and middle schools.

my point exactly-it is the kiss of death.

I allow survival mode and all it entails for my 9 yo, but don't allow connecting to friends to chat

our three boys play it unrestricted-ages 6,9 and 11 although they rarely play any more. I think Minecraft is dying out at least in our house.

7 yr old (almost 8) when he started in creative mode. Now I allow him to do easy survival. Honestly, I'm not 100% up to date on what he does on there. We have talked about it a few times when he speaks of killing something for food. He hasn't been allowed to play with others so far, but he is asking to play with certain friends.

7 yrs old. We let him kill zombie pig man, wither skeletons, etc and craft weapons too. We play together as a family. I don't think it's any more violent than the bugs bunny and road runner cartoons we watched as children.

Minecraft PE on iPad only. Haven't gotten to a game system or PC yet. My son is 7. Started him off in creative and there were no violent mobs. You can create them now with the update in August. We do survival now, too. He only plays with me or his cousin, who's 11. Nothing online with servers.

I don't like the violence aspect much, but have read it's less an issue if they are using the game the way it's intended (I.e. Kill a cow for food) vs. someone who wrecks other people's hard work. The latter is a much more troubling behavior. But you can align play with your family values. That's why I play with my son.

Turn off the violence. That's not the value or key element in Minecraft. Leaving it on you might as well be letting him play regular old shoot 'em up games.

Would you mind telling me what age your Minecraft playing DC are and what versions of it they play -- peaceful, survival etc, and what that actually means? I'm particularly interested in hearing from parents who are conservative about violence. Do you let your DC use Zombie Pigmen, Wither Skeletons, enter into combat in the Nether etc? Trying to figure out what level is okay. I'd prefer they stick to just building structures but my 11 year old is interested in all this other crap. Not sure what to do. TIA.
