This is me. Skinny jeans look awful on the vast majority of people. I'm on a tight budget and I cannot afford to go out and buy lots of new clothes every year. I've tried on skinny jeans and they just don't look good on me (I'm 5'4" and 120 lbs). So I wear darker colored boot cut jeans and I don't care what people think.

OP here: I'm into "fashion" as long as there is "function." When "fashion" is just about impressing other people, then it's a fool's game of thowing money away to improve your self esteem, right?

Fashion goes in cycles. Part of looking good isn't just what looks good objectively for all time. Part of looking good is looking stylish. And boot cut jeans, by and large, may be flattering to some people - but they aren't stylish.

(Though I have seen some fashion types wearing them the last couple of years, and I suspect within a few more years we will all have given up the skinnies since they won't look very stylish anymore. Which makes me sad. Because as a petite person, they really do look better on me than the boot cuts do.)

TL;DR: Wear what you like. There is no fashion tyranny. Looking stylish is something that some people care about, others not so much.

I couldn't agree more. And this is even more true for people like me, who are NOT made for skinny jeans. (I'm not huge, I'm just a size 8, not a size 4.)
I think if you have hips at all, then boot cut is much more flattering. It makes my legs look longer, hips look smaller. Skinny jeans make me look dumpy and short.
I will always pick a flattering look over a stylish look.

I've seen some put-down comments on this board about "you must still be wearing boot cut jeans" -- like "you're really out of touch!" But, as an owner of 4 pairs of boot cut jeans and one pair of straight leg, and I'm probably in the 10% of women over 40 who can actually wear skinny jeans (5'6" and 125lbs),....

WHY would we all switch to skinny jeans when we learned during the boot cut phase that the wider ankle balances the width of the butt. We were told (and I agree) that the boot cut flatters by creating a curvy line. I am not one who likes to follow fashion/fads just b/c some random people in Hollywood or NYC say "boot cut is out" -- the reason they are saying "X is out" is b/c they want to get my money. In order to get my money, they have to make me believe that I don't already own what I need. I have jeans. They fit (more or less). Why do I need the new skinny jeans when the same people are the one who convinced all of us that the most flattering style was the boot-cut-balancing-jeans?

Now, they want to tell me that the product I bought on their recommendation isn't good enough? And that I should give them more $$ b/c this other product (which is what they previously told me was unflattering) is now really good for me?

Are we dumb enough to follow this advice?
