If you can't pay to island hop in winter and kayak north of the Arctic Circle (OK--that's exaggeration) in summer, is it a difficult place to be? How are the sciences? Math?

Thanks!

I went there a lot of years ago. It was crunchy, but not excessively so, more of a laid-back vibe I thought. Also very outdoorsy, especially for winter sports, but also there were plenty of people, like me, who weren't into that. I think I got an excellent education, and I would make the same choice again.

Don't know about sexual assaults, although back in the day, I wasn't overly fond of how they handled disciplinary issues. But I'm not thinking of anything as serious as sexual assault.

If Bates seemed too crunchy to her, other NESCAC schools that would be less crunchy are Conn College, Trinity and Hamilton (and academically more similar to Bates). Wesleyan more crunchy, Middlebury/Bowdoin/Williams/Amherst significantly harder to get into in terms of academic credentials.

I had a friend who went there years ago, and she really liked it. Maine is beautiful. I think if you like SLAC's, then its a good choice.

Is it safe for girls? It was high on the DOE sexual assault list wasn't it?
