I hated these types of assignments in es. There was so much cutting and pasting that it was ridiculous.

When DD was in the fifth grade, my DD was marked down because of parental failure to do the HW assigned to parents. She ended up with a one because of that (while I was dealing with cancer).


PP, did you inform the school? We have unusual family issues that make it impossible for my kids to do certain assignments. The teachers always excuse my kids. I cannot imagine teachers being so cruel to your daughter.

We used colored duct tape on top of a composition book. She added a few photos/stickers and covered those with packing tape.

My impression was that it makes it more personal, and it's quicker when they're in a big stack to find yours.

Sounds like it's their notebooks, not the textbooks.

I can't believe people are defending this one. I'd feel the same way you do, op. Isn't this why notebooks come in different colors? I'd put a couple of stamps on and call it done, but that's me

It helps to differentiate different subjects so that they're not doing social studies work in their writing for example.

How about cutting pictures out of magazines, newspapers, or mailings? I doubt if you have to have stickers and doodads.

If the kids spend time "decorating" the notebooks, they are more likely to take better care of the notebooks, and not misplace them. The teacher gave this assignment for a reason.
