This is the OP. I don't even live anywhere near DC and *I* hope the DC cut-off is not 224! Over on College Confidential, 224 is the cut-off being posted, but that's why I came over here yesterday...hoping to find a student who has been notified w/a 223. I'm not giving up hope on the 223 yet, though it does appear 224 may be the cut-off for DC. We will know for sure on 9/10 when NMSC publishes the complete list of NMSFs. On 9/10, you can also call NMSC directly to find out if your student is on the list.

Congratulations to those who are getting good news! I will keep checking back to see if we obtain additional info about cut-off scores. Thanks.

Actually, Virginia's highest cut off ever was last year at 222 or 223. DC has the highest of 224 (last year anyway)


Yes, last year's was 222 and that was 5 points higher than the year before. Does anyone know if any of the public high schools in NoVa have notified any of their students yet? And if so, is there any indication that the cutoff has dropped since last year?


A new poster on College Confidential said her son with a 219 in VA was told he's a semifinalist. This would be great as my son also has a 219, but we haven't heard anything yet.

Last year it was 222, up from 218 the previous year. supposedly dropped this year to 220/221. I don't think it's ever been 225. Not sure any state has actually been at 225.



Just found out from my friend on CC that DC is staying at 224 this year again!! That's pretty unbelievable that the commended cut off went down 2 pt and every other state is going down. That's a shame for my daughter who has a 223.

There is no "historic" score. It changes every year to achieve the right number of semi-finalists. DC does not have a score, it is linked to whatever the highest state score is, which is usually Massachusetts.

What matters are percentiles not raw scores. The raw score will change, the percentile will always be the same.

Not sure about the DC being tied to highest state. People on CC who know different cut off scores said MA has been confirmed at 223, NJ at 223, but DC is staying at 224. Since NJ and MA were the other 2 highest cut offs, I think DC will be alone now as the highest

A similar thread exists elsewhere on DCUM, but I think the topic might get greater exposure here. If anyone has a student in DC who has been notified by their school as being a NMSF (notification would have been given last week), would you consider posting your student's qualifying PSAT score here? We're over on College Confidential trying to determine a number of state cut-offs, including DC, and this would help some parents and students. Thank you for any help you can provide.
