American Girl Books aren't "classics" no matter who's reading them.

But some stories/books/characters typically appeal to one gender more than the other. For example, while I think they are wonderful, classic children's books, I know very few young boys enjoy reading Little Women or A Little Princess or American Girl books, and thus I would not list them when making recommendations specifically for a boy. The information is pertinent and useful, not sure why you're picking on it.

I love this list! So many of my childhood favorites on here, especially The Golden Goblet (higher reading level than Charlotte's Web but soooooo good! Also, Mara, Daughter of the Nile is in the same vein but more likely to appeal to girls)

+1. Why anyone would suggest Ethan Frome, which is a depressing adult novel by Edith Wharton, is beyond me (even though I loved it). Weird suggestion.
