Do not worry. It will not keep your child from the HGC. Of course, it is to his and your benefit to work on those behaviors (which I am sure you are doing).

Our HGC has all kinds of gifted kids including a few boys who are very bright but misbehave.

Really? I know at our school they meet as a group but I always assumed the test was more important.

I agree with PPs who shot down the rumor but I do know that teacher/school recommendations play a huge role in the HGC process. At our school, the principal is very involved in making recommendations along with the teachers. He told me they go over the list as a group and only recommend a surprisingly small group for admission. I found that weird because we're at one of those schools were like 80% of the kids test as gifted according to the 2nd grade test and there are probably many qualified for the HGC.

Thank you everyone someone really upset me with misinformation I rally do not care if my child is gifted or not I was just given an impression that any behavioral intervention in K has a lasting impact on the child's entire academic career.

teacher here. Kids test into the HGC. It is based on teacher recommendations (3rd grade teacher as well as any others in the school), parent input, and a couple different tests. There are even gifted centers for LD kids. There is NO WAY a kid seeing a counselor plays into their acceptance at all.

My child talked to the counselor twice in 2nd grade for something emotionally related (not hitting or misbehaving) and got into the HGC.

I seriously doubt this is true. Specifically for HGC I think the first anything would be remotely impactful would be 2nd grade,since 2nd grade could impact teacher recommendation I suppose. Most of this all comes down to test scores.

Don't worry about getting into HGC when your kid is in K.

This is the OP I am serious this is a rumor going around that if you child receives counseling for let's say hitting someone in K it goes on their permanent record. I just want to know how it all works, I am a first time K mom and I don't want to ask at school!

I also hear that Harvard Business School looks at your K record and if you got any red card days, then you don't get accepted.

That's a weirdly specific rumor. If you have a behavioral issue on your record in K and received school counseling, no HGC for you, but if you have a behavioral issue on your record in first grade and received school counseling, you can go to the HGC?

I'm going to gamble here and say that it's not true.
