Mine got into several in the 30s and 40s with no APs, and W/L at a couple in the 20s.
OP, it also depends on the school. If your DC is at a school that offers 25 APs and most kids take multiple ones it may be harder than if he is at a school that offers a few. My DCs school was the latter (maybe offered 10-12), and students had to apply to take AP classes, and only one AP section was typically offered.
