This is pretty common knowledge. It's not just true of WalMart, though. They're just a particularly good (or bad, I guess) example of price points driving down quality. It's like how a lot of brands make lower quality goods specifically for their outlets.

There's an Aldi opening up in Fairfax soon. Right now my routine is Global Foods/Aldi/Wegmans in Woodbridge, but being able to do H-mart/Aldi/Wegmans will save me a ton of driving.

WalMart has the worst produce. It's what kept me from doing my regular grocery shopping there when I lived closer to one.

I really like Wegmans. If you stay away from their prepared foods, they are quite competitive. I don't think they're as cheap as WalMart, but it's worth it to me to have to make only one stop.

If you have the club card, you should receive a thin magazine-type ad from Wegman's every month or so, and in the back are coupons for the coming 4 -6 weeks. I used a $5 off of $25 today.

As for the original question, I prefer Wegman's over Walmart. The atmosphere is so much nicer, the produce department is fantastic, and Wegman's selection of food is so much larger. We have also tried quite a few Wegman's brand food items and have been very satisfied with them.

+1. Meat family packs at Wegmans and everything else at Aldi. PS ... Aldi is owned by the same company that owns Trader Joe's and a lot of the products they sell are the same at both stores, just branded differently, and cheaper at Aldi. Sadly, we don't have many Aldis in the area so you might have to go so far out of your way to shop there that it wouldn't be worth it. I think the answer will vary depending on what your family buys and how much. Wegman's has many bulk items and the prices are very reasonable - I had to compare prices on specific items a while back and Wegman's was far less than Safeway, Giant, Harris Teeter and Shoppers Food Warehouse. Costco was mixed. I think Walmart was also mixed.

^^ pp again. Wegman's paper towels are cheap and I buy toiletries on sale but their TP is atrocious. It will tear your butthole up!

I have done price comparisons with wegman's, Harris teeter, and Costco. Believe it or not wegman's is sometimes cheaper than costco. Can't speak to walmart, but give wegman's a try. If you stick to their store brand and get "family packs" of staples, their prices are insanely low. Plus you get $7 a week in coupons.

Can't comment on prices as I don't have Walmart nearby, but Wegmans prices looks very good overall. What I don't get is weekly toiletries shopping. For the family of 6 I only shop for it maybe once a month. Look @ your shopping list, it is quite possible that you're overpaying getting smaller packages vs family sized ones, and take advantage on stock-up sales

Ok, I know some of you will bash Walmart, but being Fed and not getting a raise for a few years and DH is in local law enforcement so his income had been frozen or teeny tiny raise here or there, we started shopping at Walmart Super Center for all our weekly groceries, toiletries, etc. I have always shopped there for toiletries and did Shoppers or Giant for groceries. Has anyone compared the prices of Walmart groceries to say Wegman's? I'm guessing Wegman's is more expensive but how about their store brands? I'd love to have a better selection in items which I think Wegman's has and Walmart does not. I'm also tired of going to Walmart and not finding the cut of meat I want or their shelves are completely out of something like bananas or O.J. I'm not sure I want to spend my weekends shopping at two stores (Walmart for toilet paper, toiletries, etc.) and Wegman's for food, but I might be able to hold off on Walmart shopping every few weeks instead.
