Most elementary schools have a provision where the phone is able to be kept off and in the backpack so that the child will have access to it after school when walking home or whatever. It's not like it is being used at school, but if parents want the child to have the phone during the morning commute and during the after school hours it obviously has to spend the in between hours at the school with the kid. If we were talking about elementary kids actually using their phones during school hours, I would agree with you that it is insane, but all we are talking about is it being stored in the kid's backpack while he or she is in class, which I don't find the least bit problematic.

I have a pre-paid T-mobile phone. I buy 1000 minutes per year for $100, you can get lesser amount purchases. It is a flip phone, no data. It costs 14 cents to text last l looked, but I don't text.

Well, figuring out when to give kids a cell phone is tricky, but it's definitely good you're doing some research on this and want to set some ground rules. That's what my sixth grader has - we got it at Target. It's got my phone number, my best friend's phone number and my boyfriend's phone number in it. I buy 30 minute blocks of time. I like that we can add more time at Target, which is close to our house. She can text to those three numbers as well, though there's a fee for each text. Texting is discouraged on that phone.

Please note - I am not giving any of my children a cell phone yet. But, there are times when it would be nice to hand my child a phone and say "call me when you are ready to be picked up" so that my full of energy 4th grader can stay and play with lots of other kids. Or some other instances. What I'm looking for is a phone that is pre-paid, no data and will only allow them to call certain numbers. And yes, I started researching it myself but just thought lovely DCUM could save me some time!
