If you've seen addiction up close, you wouldn't want someone giving your loved one money to get high with from those funds.

I occasionally see someone collecting money from the people on the traffic islands. It seems as if the people on the corners collect a good deal of money and then give it to someone who either holds the money for them as a security measure or takes a cut of the money to bring them to the street corners.

Does anyone know how this is structured?

I do occasionally but not as a rule. Sometimes I just feel moved to give a dollar or two, but most of the time I don't.

OP here: I haven't since I saw a few episodes of that Addiction show where they confront someone addicted to drugs or alcohol and offer free but immediate in patient treatment. One episode showed the person made hundreds of dollars a day and then immediate shot up.

No, because that money will go to booze or drugs. I give my money to So Others Might Eat, a DC charity that will feed and cloth the homeless, and give them medical care and job training.

No not usually.

There was one guy at the corner every day for years and I got to know him. I gave him money every few weeks or so.
