I need this thread too. My son is only 9 months but our playroom consists of an empty room with toys strewn all over the floor. We are looking at the ikea stuva system. We have a window and are thinking about 2 of the storage benches with cushions on top and then two of the larger shelving units on either side.

I am all about storage and maximizing vertical storage but I'm wondering how tall to make things in the playroom. A lot of the pictures online have things kid height only but it would be nice to store more stuff up high that I could get down like art supplies etc

The first thing you need to do is go through the toys and decide what should stay and what should go. Do not buy containers or storage systems until you first purge and know what you have to organize.
Once you figure out what you have, then look at the layout of your playroom. If you need ideas and your child goes to any sort of preschool, take a look at how it is set up.
As someone else posted, put things in areas as space allows: toys, building, arts and crafts..etc. then it is time to buy the storage system that will best suit your needs.
Also, do not set all the toys out. If you have a closet, put some of the toys and supplies in there. For children, having too much out can be very overwhelming for them. And change out toys every couple months and put other things away.
Make sure everything has a home and label those areas and put photos/drawings to show where things go. It will help children to know everything has a home when it comes to clean up.

I ordered a 12 pack of each - they're not all in use, but I have some ready to go when new toys come in that need to be organized. They're clear, so the clutter shows a little, but one of these days I'll put some decorative contact paper or something on them.

My 3 year old has no problem opening the latches, but the baby can't open them which is good to keep her away from chokables.

I bought some solid wood shelves/bookcases from craigslist and gave them a coat of paint. Bigger stuff just sits on the shelves and small things go in containers. I use sturdy gift bags for containers too.
I also have a largish basket on the floor for misc items. When we do a quick tidy up anything small or that doesnt have a home can go in there. I do look through it every now and again and put things back in their homes.

This is the new Ikea version. I'm planning to get this and some mesh cubes, hopefully from the Container Store. I want to be able to see what's in the cubes.

We do something similar. We also have the Target shelving with fabric bins. It's about 5 years old now and still doing fine. And we have lots of big baskets from Home Goods to contain the larger collections, like dress up clothes.

+2 You may be able to find an Expedit on Craigslist--it's perfect for organizing. We also have a large plastic bin (that snaps shut) in which we keep toys not currently in rotation, which we swap out every six weeks or so.

It's called the Callax and it's almost the exact same thing.

Toys are arranged according to their nook. Stuffed animals are in netting above the kids beds. Toys ey don't want to share are in their bedrooms.

Ours is out of control. Kids are 4 and 1. What kind of shelving, bin, drawer system do you use? Any good products to help?
