High school varsity athletes are often not home before 6pm with practice, often 10pm or later on game nights. Hard to be asleep by 8.

Love of god people, don't feed this troll- so odd!

There is a lot of "well, I had to walk uphill both ways. so you just deal" reaction to this- here and elsewhere. Or "the real world won't bend for you, so buck up now". I guess I just think if its something as easy as school districts making HS and ES switch their start times (often this is staggered because of bus availability), and we know it benefits one group and hurts no one.....why not at least have that conversation?

I say send them to Japan or South Korea and let them enjoy a year-round school schedule, a 6-day school week, and upwards of 16-hours of school work & tutoring per day. Give them a real work ethic instead of being spoiled rotten by the likes the 1% parents who hang around DC suburbia.

Pretty sure school in Japan is in session from about 8:30-3:00.

I see nothing wrong with expecting kids to do more homework instead of working or playing sports. But whereas most elementary school students easily wake up at 6am, most high school students do not. From seeing my own pre-teen's sleep patterns change, I can tell that it is a biological, not a time-management issue. Most high school students also do not require before-school care, even if their parents need to be at work before the school bus leaves. Switching the start times just makes sense. So does prioritizing being awake in class over participation in sports or even work for pay (although I don't see why a working teenager could not simply take a later shift if school let out later.) And yes, if you look at anything from TV schedules to movie and concert start times, to restaurant closing times, you will see that in our society a lot of socializing happens in the evening, and it is not the norm for grown or nearly grown people to go to bed at 8pm. Most of us would not want a job that required us to go to bed that early and miss out on socializing with our friends and family, so why would we force it on our kids?

you miss the point, they Can Not Fall Asleep Earlier, it's a phisiogic thing, not a time management issue

They will jsut stay up later hanging in their rooms and nobody is thinking of the other issues associated with late start times, how it impacts jobs, after school activities now have to take place in a smaller window due to day light and all the other non school related activities that will be impacted.

leave it as is and manage yoru kids sleep and if they are staying up all hours with homework they have bad time management skills. or try taking their phoen away until it is all done. you will be amazed how quickly it will get done.

NPR just had this story on how adolescents sleep needs are different and schools should accommodate them for health reason.
