Sunday should be fine--everyone will be coming back Monday.

Is it better if I leave early on Sunday?

Could be 5 hours in peak traffic. I always try and cross the bridge by 8am on a Saturday. Or Fridays I leave at 7. Most people take a half day Friday or leave right after work. By 7 or 8 its usually clear. I put my 9 month old in his PJs, give him a bottle and he sleeps the whole way in the evening.

My rule of thumb is to leave early Saturday morning to reach the bay bridge between 7-8 a.m. No later than 8 for sure.

A good drive from my inner suburb in VA is 3 to 3.5 hours. A bad drive (and I had one of those on a 4th of July weekend once) is 5 to 5.5 hours. Of course, your departure point from the DC metro area can add or subtract a lot from that total.

Would Friday afternoon or Saturday morning have worse traffic? How long can we expect to sit in traffic compared with how long a drive that long should normally take? Thanks in advance.
