In an emergency, you can use Color Oops just fine. It does turn your hair orange-y, but you can color it again immediately with the correct color. Just don't leave the second color on as long as you normally would. Yes, it's not the best thing for your hair, but your dried hair will recover with a good deep conditioner. Unlike your pride if you have an important meeting and don't want to show up looking like either Ronald Reagan or Bozo. Or so I would imagine...

I've been dying my hair from a box for 17 years, and had my one and only (so far?) color mistake last summer. I used Color Oops, which stripped my hair to blonde. (For reference, I'm a natural mousy brunette, who has been going red for half my life. The color I stripped out was an unintentional bright, fire engine red.)

Immediately after stripping my hair, I put a more subtle red on, and left the heavy conditioner on for 20 minutes. I also deep-conditioned every day for a week, and once a week for a month afterward. I was pleasantly surprised about how un-straw-like my hair was.

It sounds like you just colored so get a bottle of Dawn dish soap and wash a couple times. It'll lift the color.

Been using dish soap, Tide, Head and Shoulders, baking soda, cheap/clear shampoos.... anything I can think of. Not fading fast enough... but I am willing to go out in public again. Talked to the customer service person at the dye company... she flat out said that there is no such thing as "golden" color in hair dye. "Golden" means "warm" which means "red." Now, I know why I've never been able to find the right hair dye.... it doesn't exist! Lesson learned. But, I can't get an appointment with my hair stylist for three weeks... so I'm trying to fade it as much as I can while I wait.

From now on, I will join the ranks of the salon-colored women.... but I'd really like to get rid of this dark, reddish brown hair that looks terribly harsh on me.

Always use "ash" tones to avoid this.

+1 Sorry, OP. I mean, it will strip the color, but "strip" isn't exactly what you want to do to your hair. Consider it a last resort.

I used Color Opps once and it did the job, but it did make my hair extremely dry and I had to invest in a good quality gentle shampoo + moisturizing hair masque.

If hair is dyed darker than wanted, I have heard that you can't color over it to make it lighter. So, I'm guessing the only thing that will make it lighter is a variety of highlights (bleaching) -- but that won't get rid of the too-dark-dye -- correct? So, hair will be a mixture of the too-dark color plus highlights (which will have to be relatively close to the too-dark-color in order to blend)????

Turns out that med golden brown is actually dark reddish brown. Not happy with it. Don't really want orange hair...but would like it to be lighter.
