I wouldn't. I hire individuals. VT, UVA, UMD... they're all good schools.

I think everyone knows Berkeley. It might differentiate him in a good way because there are sooooo many UVA job applicants in DC. Does he know what field yet?

My son wants to attend Berkeley, but I worry that it does not carry as much weight in the Washington job market as UVA.

Your kid can get into UVA and Berkeley and you worry?

Thought Berkeley carries its weight everywhere. Isn't it usually ranked the top public college? But don't get your hopes up too high if DS is asian or white and not a resident. GL with that.

I apologize for the hijack, but do locals even know Berkeley?

It really depends on the program. I would hire an engineer or most STEM professionals from VT over UVA in a heartbeat.

Also, it really does depend on the individual.

The one who had more consistent experience working an actual job.

I'd have to meet them. School doesn't really tell me that much about the student, except that they have finished a degree program. I want to know if they worked in college, what they have done to cultivate their own interests, and if they would be a good fit in my organization. I might look twice at someone from my own alma mater, but only as an initial sorting step.

Hard to pick. One cultivates a George Huegley type... The other murder/suicide types .

There is not way that their alma mater would ever be the deciding factor for me.

I would decide by meeting them and interviewing them.

Qualifications are rarely all equal, so probably the one with the better people skills.

In another thread, there was a lot of negativity toward UVA grads. Objectively, though, it seems like it is harder to get into UVA than VT and so it is "better" school. However, if everyone has such a negative opinion of UVA grads, I am wondering which is really "better" in life.

So assuming you had a position to fill and that two qualified candidates applied---one from UVA and one from Virginia Tech, and assuming all other required qualifications were roughly equal, who would you hire?
