OP, I'm guessing that the high compensation is to offset the selling of one's soul.

I'd suggest that the salary that OP is relaying is for an executive at a trade association. The bigger named ones will pull down low seven figures (these are the association CEO's), and the association's top lobbyist could pull down $750K. For a few of them, the CEO often serves as the chief spokesman for the industry and appears to be the top lobbyist.

Let's get real. Is this a sustainable job or do you work this salary for a few years and then find something normal for the rest of your career?

I know lobbyists who make from 50k to 500k in the corporate/firm world. You make rain, you make more.

This really varies by industry. My BIL makes about 300k lobbying for world wildlife federation. He works insane hours and earns every penny. He has a friend though that works for kraft foods and makes over a million. Just depends. People love to hate a lobbyist though. My sister is a lawyer so they always joke they are Americas most hated couple...they are awesome people though!

That's not representative of the entire profession. A lobbyists salary is going to vary by where he or she works and for what industry/cause. The Humane Society or School Nutrition Association lobbyist isn't making nearly that amount.

I don't know. We were hanging out this weekend and started talking and he said "I make about $750,000".

I knew one that worked for Shell Oil. Ridiculous house, like over 10K SF.
