Cold and harsh winters x 10

I spent a year at the university and then transferred to MD, in part because everyone there was so freakin' white. Soooo whiiiiiite. Whatever anyone tells you about the university attracting a diverse population, it's all bollocks. It's a sea of white people, with some African and Chinese exchange students thrown in.

And the reason I found that annoying is that people didn't really have a frame of reference for their views. I'm a liberal, but even the liberals there bothered me because their views came from a naive, simplistic, can't-we-all-just-get-along, I-don't-see-skin-color perspective.

To be honest, I'm not sure that would bother me as much now. As I get older, I'm less interested in engaging in politics. But at the time, studying public policy, I didn't find the atmosphere stimulating (contrary to its reputation).

And, yes, it's bitterly cold and windy.

You run the risk of picking up a Wescahnsan accent, or, at the very least, having to listen to this eyeahsent every day.

Do it. Close to Chicago and Minneapolis -- both fantastic cities. Minneapolis and Madison are gems that few people know about.

How many times have you visited? Have you visited during different times of the year?

Lovely, liberal-minded university town with a super-low cost of living and friendly, down-to-earth people. If you think you can handle the winters I'd do it in a heartbeat.

I lived there for most of a year. It seemed that life there was dominated by the students. But this was a long time ago. It was really cold but the lake froze over and you could walk on it which was awesome. Global warming may have changed that.

It's cold. Did I mention snow? And dark all winter. And cold, yes, very, very cold.

Lots of great food there, great bars, great restaurants, fantastic farmer's market, center of Wisconsin government, beautiful capitol building, nice children's museum, great beer.

I think I said something about the cold, and the snow, no? And there's ice, did I mention that? You might need chains sometimes, if you live outside the city. Lots and lots of snow. There's more moisture in the atmosphere due to global warming/climate change, so the snow's only going to get worse!!

It's a fine, cultured city, if you live there only in the spring/summer/fall. Winter, well, forget it.

It's in the midwest, but Madison is a pretty cool place. It's not too far from Chicago, which is also in the Midwest, but there's more stuff to do there.
