Watership Down was a great movie, but IIRC it was also very graphic. I don't think I'd show it to an 8 yo

the movie from Stephen Speilberg - I think it was called 8 mm or something similar (NOT to be confused with the Nicholas Cage film which is rated R)

The Avatar series is wonderful storytelling - creative, funny, moving, surprising, lots of action.

Miyazaki +1 - my son loves Whisper of the Heart which is fascinating because it is a very humane, polite teen romance and he is 7. All Miyazaki is brilliant, start anywhere.

Call of the Wild tv series

Recently started my son on the original Star Trek on Amazon Prime and on Dr. Who. Loves 'em. Also watched Galaxy Quest next to Star Trek.

My boys love that show too. I was talking to my sister about dating and my 11 year old piped in and asked, "Would you date a Squatcher?" First we had to ask what a Squatcher was, then we died laughing. No, she would not date a Squatcher. Added that to her criteria.
