I'm with the PP. I have no pain tolerance and almost passed out the first time I had an IUD placed, but I was surprised that my hysteroscopy was no big deal. I had an endometrial biopsy at the same time, which was a pinch. I am wondering if other folks had scarring, polyps or other tissue removed which is why it was so terrible.

+1. Handled it as part of a lap.

I just had one - no anaesthetic, just two paracetamol the hour before. I have a high pain threshold but can sometimes have problems with smears due to a tilted womb. It hurt. Quite a lot, to the point of tears. The nurses use distraction techniques (''hairdresser chatter'') which I appreciated but I definitely feel deceived now I have read others experience. I still would not have this under GA due to the risks, and it is over in ten minutes, but I would ask for Diazapam in advance knowing what I know now.

Gosh Shady Grove does all of theirs with light anesthesia and that's how I had it done. Which meant it was entirely a no brainer. I was knocked out, it took 10 minutes today, and then I awoke and was out of there in 30-45 minutes. I had 2 done this way, and one had some scraping/cutting of scarring. The other was just to look to ensure all was cleared up.

A friend of mine had one without anesthesia and she said it was horrible and unbelievably painful and she was so upset to hear that some do it with anesthesia and she didn't have that option mentioned to her.

I had one for polyps and I was put under general anesthesia so it was not bad at all.

Which would you regret more -- DH taking off work and you feel fine (on valium) or DH doesn't take off and you feel pain during the procedure?

That's a good way to frame it. Honestly I'd regret the former more bc his days off are finite and I want to save them for the really big stuff, bc who know how long this is going to drag on for. (Or it could be a day on some beach somewhere when this is all over!)

It was physically and emotionally painful, though my husband was with me, I called my mom immediately after the procedure and cried like a baby.
It's hard to believe that some women just have one night of unprotected sex and get pregnant while some of us have to experience all this.
Good luck to you! After you see the baby's smile, you'll know it was worth it!

I was prepared for intense pain and found it not even slightly painful. No way to tell, I suspect.

I've had a few - the pre-IVF quick peek wasn't too bad for me.

FWIW - the ones that were more painful for me were still relatively short and I just felt crampy afterwards. Not ongoing pain.

It really depends on how exploratory they will be. I have had two - the first was pretty thorough and the doctor tried to snip some uterine growth during the procedure. It hurt like hell - I kept asking myself *how* I had gotten through a med-free childbirth when I couldn't handle the hysterscopy... The second was pretty quick - just in and out to see whether the growth was still there. Easy and virtually painless.

I need to have a hysteroscopy before I can proceed with IVF (exploratory at this point). I was told that if I can tolerate pain well I just need Advil but if not they would give me a valium. I am trying to decide if I need my husband to take off work bc of the valium (that's not easy). Any feedback on your experiences would be helpful. For comparison sake I handled the dye test fine. I've had an IUD inserted and thought it was a nightmare (haven't had kids apparently that's more painful).
