There actually is on 95N after you cross into VA... Not sure if it's the first one or further down (definitely way before Richmond). Tiny playground but our kids played there and we wondered why there weren't more rest areas like that around.

There is a fantastic playground known as Kidsburg, or MidCounty Park, in Williamsburg - it's not a "rest stop" per se but worth a short detour. Get off 64 at Route 199 Humelstein parkway (at/near Great Wolf Lodge) It's 7 miles off 64. Here is a link:

How old are your kids? For our 2 yo twins, they are NOT as anxious as we are to get where are going especially when the trip is more than 5 hours. They don't understand and they are bored and want to get down and run around for a while. I think this is much more normal than your children who are anxious enough to get where they are going that they don't want to get out of the seat. That's not normal toddler behavior.

go to maps.google.com and find the names of cities you will be near. (note them)
go to kaboom.org and type in the name of the city and see the parks near there. Usually they are elementary schools with playgrounds.

There is a chick fil a with play place in Roanoke Rapids, NC.

Get off at the a William and Mary exit buy some sandwiches at the Cheese Shop and let the kids run around in the Sunken Gardens for an hour
