What if you shake hands and then be careful to not touch your face or anything until you either wash your hands or use hand sanitizer? I am too concerned about coming off as a weirdo to refuse a handshake.

Donald Trump says he doesn't like shaking hands because he meets a lot of people everyday since he is famous and they all want to shake his hand. So he doesn't like it because it's how germs and colds are spread.

In a disease prone/underdeveloped area or if you're visibly sniffling, I get it if you don't shake hands. But to have people say it in NYC comes across as ludicrous. But I have had it happen -- it makes the person who extended their hand in a job interview feel like a dumbass but do what you need to do OP.

But wave with the palm toward you. Away is offensive in some cultures.

I was thinking of just smiling and nodding my head without extending my hand.

I do this with a slight wave, whenever I'm traveling to disease prone areas.

Namaste

It's egalitarian. It recognizes that the same divinity resides in you and other people. I have heard the word and gesture described as stating "The divinity within me, bows to the divinity within you!"

If you are getting tropical diseases, then look at the way people from those climates greeted each other!
