What do you recommend that parents do? I would be very interested in getting candid response from a kindergarten teacher? DH thinks she should just put DC on the bus and not go through all the drama of meeting her at the school, taking pictures, etc. But then again, I don't want her to feel like she's the only there the 1st day without a parent.

Our kindergarteners don't go the class for the first couple of weeks. They go to the theater and the teachers walk them in.

I drove our DC to school with another kindergartener when she started. (She was aware of what to expect due to the orientation and open house). She was fine.

Also, our school does not want parents walking the kids to the class. It can be harder for the kids to "let go" at go to class.

Our school says the parents can walk their kids to the front door, but prefer that they are left there. This helps them get into the routine and avoids separations in the classroom around all the other kids and kids' parents.

The teachers want to welcome the kids in and help them adjust to the classroom right away.

You should have already had an orientation or an open house type of thing for dropping off the classroom supplies before the first day and that's your opportunity to walk your kids to class.

I plan on walking her to her classroom and then sneaking around to peek in the window all morning! Just kidding, but I wish I could!

Depends on the school - at our school all the classes line up in the parking lot. You can walk them to the area where their class assembles and cheer them as they walk inside. You cannot go to the classroom with them. They have volunteers for the bus riders.

They have teachers or patrols meet the kids as they get off the bus and they get them to the right room. Whatever the school's procedures, rest assured that they do not expect kindergarteners to figure it out on their own the first week. The schools do this every year. They know how to make it work. The last thing they want is a crying, lost child.

You can put the kid on the bus and then meet them at the school. But, you don't have to.

If you can't bring the supplies at open house, then you pretty much have to go with the kid on the first day b/c the supplies are supprisingly heavy and bulky. They will need help (even if they are beyond kindergarten).

Bring the school supplies to the open house before school starts. Also prepare your child for the fact that they might be communal supplies and not just his or hers.

At my school Kindergartners go to the gym the first week of school.

I always walk my kids to their classroom on the first day if we couldnt go to open house...they are going to be in 3rd and 5th. It is totally expected that you will get them to the right room as a kindergartener....but if you cant, they do have people to lead them to the right room.

.by the end of the first week all the kinders are walking in like the big kids, without parents.

There were a ton of volunteers and 6th graders greeting and walking the Kinders (bus riders, walkers, kiss n riders) to their respective classroom for the first week. Parents still walked too, but after the 2nd and definitely by the 3rd day there were hardly and parents with their kids.

This varies by school. Both FCPS schools we started at had K students meet in cafeteria rather than go to classroom. This is the daily routine for all students also, they go to cafeteria or gym until bell.

Our school does kiss and ride. I don't feel comfortable just dropping off my 5yo in front of a brand new school where he doesn't know anyone. Plus his supply list is pretty massive. I'd like to help carry the supplies to his class.
