New poster- Do you know if they provide counseling for "typical" kids?

Yes, they do.

We did expressive therapy. I found the group good and the therapist, Dan, fantastic. But in the end, I'm not sure my son ever generalized what he learned outside of group.

National Speech offers group therapy. Even if a kid doesn't have a speech delay he/she might have issues accessing the right words/behavior when they're excited/upset. We've done individual therapy there and had a good experience.

I've also heard good things about Alvord Baker.

Your bad experience with Laura Rubinoff only means YOU had a bad experience. I'm glad you were able to find a social skills class more suitable to your child's needs (and yours). We have had a fabulous experience with her group (and not so great experience with others). So, OP, you see, it really depends on personalities of the group, your child and yourself. Honestly, I would sample a few of the groups who offer social skills as they all operate slightly differently. One may suit your needs over another.

Expressive Therapy in Rockville does them. My daughter is slightly quirky and the rest were a lot quirky. It was expensive, not covered and I didn't feel she got a lot out of them, so we did it for a year and stopped. You can look at other people's reviews of the company. My big gripe was that the leaders were in training and supervised by a psychologist. I felt it was a lot of money to pay for relatively inexperienced leaders.

I just received a recommendation that I try a social skills group for my 8 year old son. Does anyone have experience with these? Any recommendations in Montgomery County? I'm not even sure where to start.
