That stuff is not at all the same. Ick.

+1. I have some cheap-o rice cooker my parents gave me for my first time living on my own (1997). It still works. It's idiot-proof. Use the cup. Add rice, add water, press button. It even has a keep warm function, so you can start it as soon as you get home.

We also have the Sanyo fuzzy logic cooker (a 10-cup) since DH is Asian and we eat rice a lot. It comes with a steam basket so you can steam veggies or meat (probably fish would work best) while the rice cooks. I only use the steam basket to make chawanmushi, though!

The best part about the model I have is that it has a bunch of settings, so it makes perfect brown rice and white rice, but it also can be used as a slow cooker and to cook porridge (which is key since DH loves rice porridge and oatmeal, and I, being Italian, love my polenta -- and love that I don't have to babysit it in the rice cooker). I basically use it every day -- if not for rice, for slow cooking or for porridge.

I have the Sanyo fuzzy logic -- they're a bit cheaper than the Zorijushi. I've had it for 8 years and love it. Very occasionally I use it as a crock pot, but mostly I just use it to make the best rice ever. I'm not a unitasker fan, but the rice cooker is an exception.

Love my rice cooker. Rice comes out perfectly every time. It is a cheap model that refuses to die even after 10 years. Definitely a worthwhile purchase.

Zojirushi! I have a fuzzy logic rice cooker, but we make a lot of rice and it is totally worth the price.

That said, they have cheaper models that also make great rice.

We have a rice cooker, and it's great. Works with all kinds of rice plus quinoa, steel cut oats, and other grains . I like that I don't have to think about it. I also like the timer when setting it to have oatmeal ready on a winter morning!

I have a rice cooker - I make rice in it only.

There are recipes for adding in chicken and veggies but I never have thought about doing that.

It makes rice really well.

Get a basic rice cooker. The bells and whistles are seldom used. I have had a Zojirushi for almost seven years and make rice everyday.

Or you can do what I do. Take 1 cup rice and 3 and 1/2 cups of water in a microwave safe glass container (at least 7 cups capacity) - microwave for 18 minutes.

they have special rice pressure cookers you can make yummy special brown rice in. My sister only uses this kind, and we are Korean. But they are pricey...like $400+.

I am admittedly not the best cook and I can't seem to cook rice no matter what I do. I was looking at rice cookers and noticed that they can also steam chicken/veggies at the same time. Seems like a dream come true for me. Has anybody tried this and have any rice cooker brand recommendations?
