OP here - thanks for setting me straight! I assumed (incorrectly) that so long as the straps threaded through, we were ok. Now I'm seeing that this triple-duty bunting simply isn't going to happen...we're going to need the shower cap one for car seat as well as plans for stroller/bassinet and moby. Thanks all!

Did not use a bunting for my November baby and it was freezing last winter. We dressed him warmly and wore him in a carrier with a big jacket over him. The body heat is so much warmer! The shower cap style cover for the car seat was awesome though if you are ever going to drive anywhere this winter.

We really liked this one. It does run big.

I had a November baby in a year with multiple blizzards. Don't have a car; didn't use a stroller (because there was a foot of snow on the ground.

We went out for a walk every day. Kiddo in a snow suit then in a wrap carrier (had no problem with getting snowsuited newborn into the carrier--those things are designed to work for 2 year olds as well as newborns). I bought a quilted vest two sizes too big and zipped that over the kid if it got colder or windier.

I'd comfortably take a newborn out in sub-freezing temperatures for an hour or more if the kid was carried against my body. Not so sure that I'd be as comfortable with them in a stroller. I generate plenty of body heat, but newborn babies don't.

nothing should go under the baby in the carseat - even if the straps thread through. google it.

if you don't want the shower cap style, just use baby blankets tucked under the sides/legs.

we used a mid-weight fleece bunting when we were out on walks and our baby was in the baby carrier (boba) or in the stroller. sometimes we added another blanket or two over top if it was very cold.

It would never fit. Trust me, buntings are enormous. I highly doubt the ability to strap a baby in a bunting into a snug Ergo.

I used to just use the bjorn and wear a jacket that covered both of us (my husband's). On freezing days we'd wear his winter parka, on so so days his fleece. Pop a hat on baby and you're ready to go. Plus baby gets tons of body heat from you so it's easier to keep him/her at the right temperature.

I used to just put my winter baby in the carrier with a hat on and zip DH's coat over her. What the baby wore depended on how cold it was out-cotton or fleece sleeper. She was always warm and snug and I could monitor her temperature and unzip the coat as needed.

OP here - thanks all for the input so far. I think we'll go with the above link to the 7 a.m. enfant sac igloo over the shower cap situation because of its versatility. I totally understand that a big bunting/snowsuit on a baby that then has to be strapped into a carseat is not safe b/c of all the bulk and the inability to get the harness straps snug enough - but this 7 a.m. enfant sac zippers open all the way and the harness threads through so that you can get infant in and very secure/snug before zipping up. What I like is that you can use it as a bunting in a bassinet and as a snuggly in the stroller for next Winter (probably also even in the Moby in a pinch) - I prefer things that do double/triple duty. As I mentioned we're avoiding the carseat as much as possible, so won't be using a snap and go and wouldn't get nearly enough use out of the shower cap style that really only is for an infant car seat. I think based on the suggestion that baby was too warm in snowsuits we'd opt to also get a lighter fleece snowsuit rather than some crazy down/quilted number - can always supplement with blankets if out in the Moby. I had a Nov baby through the polar vortex. Agree to get the shower cap style JJ cole bundle me that goes over the car seat (not not in/under baby - it's not safe in the car) and later blankets and you'll be fine in the car and stroller.

My SIL is in Wyoming and sent me all of her bunting and coats. I used the bunting exactly once with the Vista bassinet - the bunting was enormous even though her babies were the same age/season as mine.

I used one sweatshirt type snowsuit a few times with the ergo and infant insert and unless it was freezing cold baby was too hot. With the k'tan which is like the Moby it was still on the warmer side but ok.

Mom of a Dec baby here. There is no need for a snow suit or bunting. Instead get a fleece cover for the car seat. Dress the baby warmly in regular clothes, put in the car seat, layer a blanket over the baby and then put the fleece cover over the car seat. That will keep baby warm while allowing him/her to be safely buckled in the seat.

Get a snap n go or a stroller that you can drop the car seat bucket onto.

Don't get 3 month size. Buntings are huge. I got a newborn sized one for my November baby and it was still like a 9 month size on her in Jan/Feb when we had all the snow. I found the bunting hard to deal with... It's so bulk you can't really get the straps over it and the infant seat is so small the bunting just consumes it.

Would be grateful for advice from mums who have had winter babies. For a newborn in January, what should we be buying in terms of bunting/snowsuit for the baby? I know I won't be able to control this, but would love to get out for daily walks etc. as soon as possible. I have a moby wrap and will be getting a stroller with bassinet so those are both options (we'll also have a carseat/carseat adapters for the stroller but I'm going to try to avoid that unless actually out running errands - would rather baby lie flat or be worn). Should we be getting a snowsuit/bunting type thing in a 3 month size (based on DH and I, it's unlikely that the baby will be tiny). Something in polar fleece more or do we need to go insulated/quilted? Or should we forego this all in favour of more of a car seat and stroller snuggly thing like this:
