Mazda 5. Was 19K.
Gas is $45 per fill-up (12 gallons), every 2 weeks.
Sorry, no idea about insurance, DH pays it with his car's insurance.
No regular maintenance costs. DH goes to a guy he knows who charges very reasonably during the garage after hours. We haven't been to see him in years.
The regular maintenance recommendations, just like dentist appointments every 6 months, are quite superfluous. Of course it depends on how much you drive.

OMG! Your monthly gas cost equals a car payment!

I have a 17 yr old Honda Civic that my parents bought me when I was in grad school. Insurance is ~$460 a yr. I fill up every 2 wks ~$30 at Costco.

An oil change every 6 months, parked on the street in DC ~$30 a yr.

May I ask who you guys are insured with? What state?

I'm in Mayland and pay $1,500 a year with Allstate. I have a 2011 Jeep Cherokee. One small accident three years ago but my rates didnt go up because I have the accident forgiveness policy. That was less than $ 10/month. No speeding tickets. I called Geico and their rate was almost identical.

I bought a 2014 Ford Focus Titanium. My monthly payment is $345, I pay my insurance yearly (1 payment of $770), and I get an oil change about every other month ($40 each). Gas varies based on what I have going on but at least 1 fill up a week so $40.

You will pay more for insurance if you have not owned a car in a while. It will also be harder to find an insurer. Your age will also be a factor. Under 25 and you will pay quite a bit more, especially since you have not had a car recently. Your neighborhood will also have an impact.

I would call around and get estimates with various cars that you have in mind.

Around $1700.

When you factor in cost of the car, insurance, maintenance and repairs, plus gas, the cost of owning a car is generally about $500-$700 per month if you buy a mid-range car and drive it about 15k per year and hold it about 10 years.

I live in VA and feel that I am getting nickeled and dimed (compared to where we lived before) with Personal Property taxes, registration, county and city stickers/registration nonsense. Stuff adds up.

That said, a few hundred a month for insurance and gas at least.

Well that's why I said "your car" in the title. Just looking to see a few different estimates. I meant to say including car payments in the op, too.

OK, well I have a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee, paid off.
Insurance is about $100/mo but this covers my husband's car as well.
It costs about $70 to fill the tank, which I do about twice a month but my commute is very short.

Never owned a car in dc. How much does having a car cost per month, overall? (Including insurance, gas for commuting, repairs, and anything else?)
