Cake, friends, some kind of playtime or activity = fun time for the guests!
Some kids have car or superhero themes and many if their guests aren't into those things but have a fun time anyway. Do what your DD likes and invite bits and girls.

At 4 my son loved princesses, and at 3 he still actually dressed up in princess dresses. If you invite boys, do make sure you offer a safe space for them to be just as princessish as the girls. And for the girls, for that matter, to be knights or whatever.

my son went to a pink hello kitty party and got a goody bag full of hello kitty bracelets which he loved and wore for weeks. he is 4. He likes princesses enough and would love a princess themes party (though mainly because he'd get to eat cake - we never have cake at home)

Please invite the boys too! My son was so sad when he wasn't invited to his best friend's party because her mom would only allow her to invite girls to her princess party. He is firmly anti-princess but he loves knights and princes and would have probably even gotten over his hatred of princesses to spend time with his friend.

This. Especially because some kids -- boys and girls -- are scared of people in costumes, so you'll want to have activities other than visiting with the princess.
This is a good idea.
DS has been to a princess party and it was fine. To be honest, he's pretty happy as long as there is cake. And, having some activities, friends, etc is an added bonus.
Especially at age 4, it's totally fine to invite the whole class. And, I think it's a bit rude not to!

We did this, and the boys were mice--Cinderella's footmen. They loved it.

If you invite boys, just make sure there is something a little less girly- something to do with knights, crowns that are more king like, dancing (the boys liked doing this). Just don't make it all princess and tea party.

My son would happily go but he'd have no interest in dressing up. Save the money. I'd prefer he not run around with swords. If your daughter wants a princess theme, go for it.

I do not believe in inviting the whole class. Just invite the kids she likes, and make it a castle party or a royal court party if she has friends who are boys.

My son went to one. It was dress up and they brought knight costumes for the boys, complete with "chain mail" and plastic swords. Honestly, the boys were not into dress up. They ran around w swords and the princesses did their thing.

My daughter wants to have a princess visit her party. What do folks think of this for a boy-girl full class party. I'm a little embarrassed by it but she's into it, so I figure why not. She's 4. I'm thinking maybe I just stick to a short visit from the princess instead of having the whole party focus around it.
