I am getting purple extensions soon because the salon convinced me that dying it that type of color was difficult, damaging, and short lasting. I imagine the color you want is the same.

Ugh...so not true. Unless there is a dress code at your workplace, just go for it. Sorry, but if you let these kinds of things dictate your life how sad is that? You only live once, it's your life and nobody elses. Have some fun once in a while.

You will need lots of bleaching to get that color since you aren't blonde already. Also you will need constant re-treatment on the roots and to keep the red fresh and bright. Red dulls and fades REALLY fast. So it will take a lot of time and money to keep the look up. I suggest going to a colorist, yes. But if you can't afford that join a hair forum and get tips there - I think people on DCUM probably don't have the same kind of knowledge pool those folks have. They dye their hair all the time and have great tips!

This only works with blonde hair. The rest of us have to bleach first. I had did that color with manic panic in the early 2000's and it was strawberry shortcake pink in 2 washes.

Go for it. I think it is a beautiful color. You will look like Ariel from "The Little Mermaid."

If I were you, I would go to a professional for the best results. I don't see how any drug store color kit can achieve those fab results. Also, a professional can also advise you on how to maintain that hue because red is the toughest color to maintain. Esp. a color that intense.

I envy you for being brave enough to go that red.

Don't you have to bleach it first to get that intense red color? That's pretty damaging.

I'd do a stripe or a wash out color until this sensation goes away.

I don't like hair that doesn't look like an actual color that happens naturally. (I really detest when when bleach the hell out of their hair or put in "highlights" that look like stripes.)

OP, keep in mind that these women are wearing heavy makeup to offset this bold look. If you generally wear makeup, great, but if not, then maybe go for something a little softer.

Professional all the way. I spent many years dyeing my own hair and then having a salon do it. You wont' get those results on your own.

There is nothing sexier in this world than red hair. Do it.

Red is really hard to keep looking good. I have my natural, but fading red hair dyed every 8-12 weeks now.

To keep that look fresh you will need a good colorist, a lot of time, and a lot of money.

Has anyone ever done this? Professional, or any DIY box dye kits? Any things you would do differently?

I'd really like to dye my hair a beautiful burgundy red, for a while. I know some people hate the look - but I love it. I'm generally a fair skinned dark brunette, and want to go bold!
