Hockey skates don't have a toepick, so he had a hard time adjusting to wearing figure skates and would hit the toepick (which figure skaters use for harder moves) and he would land badly.

NP. Toe pick is (I believe) the thing at the front of the ice skate. You use it to stop. In ice hockey, you stop a different way. So at first, he has a hard time stopping because he doesn't know to use the toe pick.
