OP, I know how you feel - I have weird jewelry issues. Vermeil is about as far as I can go.
But, the real stuff is expensive, the price of gold doesn't seem like it's going way diwn any time soon, and as a PP pointed out real jewelry can be staid.
So, I've worked on finding fun jewelry that still works with my own jewelry hangups. One of my favorite pieces is a necklace of rock crystal beads. I get a ton of compliments, it satisfies my "authentic materials" issues, and it was super cheap.

LOL pp here. One example I will give is I want a big pair of diamond studs (have smaller ones). But the ones I want are $10k and with a new baby I am worried about losing one, etc., so I am going to buy a nice sparkly cheap pair at Nordstrom until I get the real ones. I wont lie and say they are real, but they do look pretty!
I also have a ton of David Yurman and although there are real diamonds in there I consider some of it costume because of the semi precious stones. Its all about how you wear it IMO.

I love fun costume jewelry. And that's all that matters =) You can change the look of an entire outfit with a bubble necklace and fun bracelet!

OP here. I don't wear jewellery unless I am going to a wedding or other special event, so that's why it's easier for me to wear the real stuff.
Since we were robbed, I only have three necklaces.

The only people I know who insist on only wearing "real" jewelry live in the DC area, so maybe that is a thing here. (I've also gotten irritated when they freak our about losing an earring and have to search Tysons for the thing. Lots of fun.)

If it seems cheap and fake to you, Don't wear it. Not all of us can afford diamonds and pearls every day.
I think it's more fun, personally, to accessorize with costume jewelry. I get a lot of stuff from Lou Lou, Etsy, and Novica.

No, I think costume jewelry is fun and can be very trendy. It's much more "current" looking than the real thing and you also don't have to worry about it getting stolen or losing an earring.
The only people I know who insist on only wearing "real" jewelry live in the DC area, so maybe that is a thing here. (I've also gotten irritated when they freak our about losing an earring and have to search Tysons for the thing. Lots of fun.)

It's funny - up until maybe a year ago I thought all that jeweled costume stuff was so tacky. I was always very understated with jewelry and stuck to plain pearl studs and the like. But I had this urge to get a few, and I've now amassed a collection of probably 30 statement necklaces. They're the perfect finishing touch to a LBD and I get so, so many compliments. Etsy has a ton for a reasonable price.
