My mom does this too, because she has both kinds of phones and prefers to sit in a chair while speaking. Its a pain.

Wow - thank you! That is actually a great idea. Yes, she does have two land-line phones - old style with noting fancy or distracting - but seems to be putting one receiver down on the table next to the telephone rather than back on the phone. An old wall mounted telephone might just be the solution!!!

THANK YOU!!!!

My dad was doing this and it turned out he wanted to nap and was sick of us calling him. Not helpful to OP, but it was funny when we figured it out.

What kind of phone is it? Is it cordless? If so, what if you got her an old fashioned phone that has a very short cord connecting the phone to the base so she has to sit right next to the base when she talks? Maybe the proximity would help her remember. If you can't find a phone with a short cord, you can always buy the cord separately:

Thank you. This is not something we have tried since we're not sure if she can still read (or understand what she is reading) but it is definitely worth a shot.

Thanks!

She has her own apartment but the staff can enter at any time -- and clearly they don't hear the annoying signal. My annoying signal stops after one minute and I'm assuming hers does as well.

Thanks for responding.

Is she in an apartment independently or is it more open where staff would hear the annoying signal and hang it up if they hear it?

My mother, hard of hearing and in the mid-stages of Alzheimer's, has been forgetting to put the telephone back on the hook in her assisted living apartment.

Is there any devise that would remind her? Has anyone else encountered this problem with an elderly parent or grandparent?

Thanks.
