Vera Bradley or Le Sport Sac. The latter is great because it is very light weight. It's popular with the older crowd and comes in some very nice designs.

How about Coach? They have some nice, low key bags in your price range. So does J. Crew. Kate Spade might also work.

The Ferragamo purses are beautiful and very much what I was picturing, but way, way above my price range. I was thinking of something under $400
