To qualify for disabled parking one's walking ability must be severely limited. So much so that they cannot walk 200 feet. I don't think those claiming to have invisible disabilities realize how restrictive a requirement severely limited is.

The average walking speed of a human is 3 miles per hour or 264 feet per minute. If you have a normal gait with no visible signs of impairment you can walk 200 feet in 45 seconds. So anyone claiming they have an invisible illness where there are no visible signs of impaired walking are saying they cannot walk 45 seconds.

I am young and mostly look able yet I have a handicap. I only use the handicapped parking/seating on buses when my medical issue is flaring. You'd basically have to be a physical therapist to notice, because I subconsciously walk to hide it.

OP, maybe he gestured he can't talk because he happens to have laryngitis right now. But really, what his handicap is, is none of your business. I am not required by law to disclose my handicap to random strangers who want to know.

The person parking next to me at the grocery store was occupying a handicap parking space. I wanted to ask how someone who's young & able like him gets access to a handicap tag but he gestured that he can't talk. I thought handicap spaces are for people with physical disabilities so I was a bit surprised and feeling guilty but then now I can't find any information about this online. *sigh*
