I would think this is dementia possibly setting in. Just try to be understanding and kind, treating her behavior as a symptom of a disease beyond her control.

The lesson to learn is that you will never have the kind of mother-daughter relationship that you desire. Don't talk to her about this kind of issue. Sucks, but that's what it is.

Current IUDs prevent the sperm from reaching the un-fertilized egg. Definitely not an abortion. (The old, inert ones could also act to prevent a fertilized egg from implanting itself in the uterus lining.)

Well, the subject says it all. I have never gotten along with my mom but as she ages she has been saying crazy things, like how we used to be super close and we were the role model mother-daughter relationship. She said the "old me" was loving and nurturing and wouldn't ever abort a child (in response to my getting an iud). Everything is just super extreme and depressing and past tense. Is it the beginning of dementia? Is she depressed about how her life has turned out? I'm not sure how to deal other than just quit talking to her but I don't want to alienate other family members in the process.
