What is wrong with sliding glass doors? I don't understand your comment.

OP here. Thanks everyone! I'm checking out your suggestions.

As to this poster, I'm anticipating the snobs on this site only like French doors and the like.

I just use panels from pottery barn, and open them manually every morning. Sometimes I have two on each side and other times I put the panels scrunched up where the wood dividers are, so more light gets in. I agonized about this too. Originally I bought slider curtains from country curtain, but they just didn't look right with our decor. Maybe they would work in your house.

We have the sliding panels from Ikea with drapes on the sides over our sliding glass door. We got the four track unit which allows for 3 tracks for the panels and one track for the drapes. Super easy to use and so so so much better than the vertical blinds that were there before. Also much cheaper than custom draperies or shades.

You can also get shades that come down from the outside

I'm with you -- I don't like the vertical blinds or the sliding panels. I have one drape that we tie up to one side when we aren't using it, plus a cornice over the top of the entire thing.

check out smith and noble, they have a ton of stuff.

Ikea has some sliding panels and tracks, they can look really cool and I'm sure they are reasonable.

Blinds have come a long way and are really attractive these days.

What do folks recommend? I hate verticals because they are so 80's. I saw some sliding panels and I'm not sure how I feel about those. It would be really helpful if folks could hold back their snark on sliding glass doors. I know, I know, but that's what the house has and that's what I can afford.
