I grew up outside of Philly and knew many kids who did it, and I eventually did it myself. Was the best thing I ever did as a kid. Can't wait for my kids to have the opportunity.

I grew up in New England and all of my Jewish friends went to Jewish summer camps, but not really anyone else. We went to day camps.

I never went and didn't know anyone who did (grew up in DC suburbs), but ALL my friends in NYC are sending their kids at 8 and 9 - FB full if the bus pictures today... I don't think I'll do it, but only bc I don't have the experience, so it feels weird to me...

Mine has been there for two weeks already. Letters home are begging to stay the summer. However, she is the only one of her friends to have gone this summer. I grew up going to sleep away camp and I passed the tradition onto my DD. My husband never went and thought the concept was odd but was wiling to try it because she desperately wanted to go. He sees he pictures every night and reads the letters, he now admits that she's having the time of her life.

Funny, my wife (from the northeast) recently commented that not many kids in this are go to sleep away camp. The preference seems to be day camps.

It used to be more common before the air conditioning in homes. Families would leave the cities and go to upstate NY for the summer.

I grew up in a wealthy part of Long Island. Many, many kids went. I don't see it so much around here.
Today was camp day, though, the buses all went north from Jersey and Westchester - it's all over my Facebook feed from my friends with older kids.

Both mine go away. DD has two separate weeks of Girl Scout camp. DC will have a week at Camp Letts. They love it.

I went to ymca camp every year from age 9 to 13 or 14 when I was a kid. It was seriously the highlight of my year. This was in the 80s.
I think it's important for parents to let their kids learn how to be independent (I'm talking to you, PP!).

Seems like everyone these days send their kids to overnight camps once they reach a certain age. I only remember a few friends going when i was a kid. Is this a nee trend, or did i just have an unusual group of friends and his was aleays the case?
