OP, ignore the ignorant people who are questioning why you would want to do this. They clearly don't know anything about literacy (not to mention family relationships). It's fantastic that you're doing this. I don't have any specific suggestions, just encouragement.

I can still remember my English teacher reading Huckleberry Finn to my seventh or eighth grade class. It was awesome.

pp above here. That is exactly how we feel about it.We all lay on our bellies read the story, and sometimes, additional tidbits of things that worry them come out too and we can have a nice chat. It is one of my favorite parts of my day.

I stopped reading to my kids when they were able to read by themselves. I can't imagine my teens sitting there while I read to them!!! Really??

I still read aloud to my 13 year old.Neither one of us were that interested in reading a popular series, so we're reading it together at night with their younger sibling. Its fun.

My parents didn't read aloud to me once I could read on my own because I loved reading so much and doing it out loud went too slowly. I still managed to get into an Ivy.

Personally, OP, I grew up with people reading aloud as a form of entertainment--long car trips, summer vacations. So I think it's a great idea. PP's idea to read plays is excellent.

Cut the cord momma. You can have her read a book before bed, or a chapter or two but you reading a book to her? How odd and uncomfortable she would feel.

I'm sorry, why would you read aloud a book to your teens? Young ES who can still read - fine. But teens? Why?

We read all of the plays she was assigned for school aloud.

Does anyone do this? I always had intentions on continuing once DD got older, but failed. Going to start back up this weekend and make it a nightly thing again, like I did when she was younger. For those that are still reading aloud which books have you found to be the most enjoyable for this age group (specifically HS years)?
